Inter-island Resilience Connection (iReX) Project

The iRex Project was a large-scale programme of works 2022 & 2023, to upgrade the ferry service between New Zealand’s North & South Islands. The aim of the project was to deploy two new custom-designed ferries, along with two new ferry terminal buildings - one at Kaiwharawhara in Wellington and the other at Waitohi / Picton.

Project summary

Subcontracted to the WSP-Jacobs-Royal HaskoningDHV Alliance, cOlab were responsible over a 2-year period, for the travel information and wayfinding design at each terminal location - for the building interiors as well as for each building’s precinct.

Our work covered passenger flow analysis, identifying where signage should be located in each precinct / building and in collaboration with the WSP Building and Landscape Architecture Teams, designing intuitive wayfinding communication solutions for every decision point along a passenger’s route between the ferry and the ferry terminal precinct perimeter.
